Hospital Care

Choosing the right specialist or oncologist also involves choosing the hospital the doctor is affiliated with.  It is an important consideration when safety and hospital care are important factors to a patient’s health and well being.  Try and avoid being in a hospital – home is always the best- to prevent further complications from occurring and exposure to infections.  Look into “Visiting Physicians” as another alternative.

Whenever possible I recommend that a family member, close friend or loved one remain in the hospital with the patient at all times.  While this is not always feasible – it is truly important.  A patient needs a family member or advocate to be with them to ensure that the appropriate medication and/or treatment is given – many times mistakes can be made and needs to be carefully monitored.  Also, due to a shortage of nursing and technical staff it is not always possible for the patient to have one-on-one care.

My mother, Frieda, had been admitted to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital six times.  Five out of six of these times, my mother was readmitted to the hospital for two weeks at a time. My sister and I took turns being with her – we never wanted to leave her alone if we could help it.  It also proved to comfort her knowing we were there and gave her a sense of security. We were able to act as coordinators among the various doctors -  the different specialists communicated among themselves largely through a computer – which I found to be inefficient.  It opened up the possibility for errors to take plae.

Unfortunately with cancer frequent  readmission to a hospital is something that one can expect.  I often wished that wasn’t the case.  No sooner did she get stronger and be discharged, complications developed and she had to return to the hospital.  We reluctantly brought her back to the hospital and there were many problems with this – in the case of my mother, Frieda, she had to go through the Emergency Room (ER) each time.  This was a truly horrific and painful experience – especially for an elderly cancer patient.

Being in the ER exacerbated my mother’s condition, physically, mentally and emotionally; she was terribly frightened and not always treated with sensitivity and compassion.  If would have been preferable if we could have avoided the trauma of the Emergency Room, and as much as I had requested this whenver she was readmitted it was never done by the hospital administration.  It is my belief that cancer patients, particularly elderly patients, need to have special consideration and given priority for admission.
